Primary Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating, however, this isn’t the same type of sweating that normally occurs during exercise or heat exposure. Hyperhidrosis commonly affects the underarms (armpits), palms, groin, feet and face and is a cause of embarrassment, social anxiety and professional burden to those who have it. The heavy sweating from primary hyperhidrosis may be a genetic dysfunction of nerves regulating sweat production. Living with hyperhidrosis comes with the expensive burden of managing the associated stains and odours: dry cleaning, replacing items of clothing & purchasing accessories to conceal the condition (sweat pads/shields).
The Primary hyperhidrosis mentioned above differs from Secondary hyperhidrosis. The latter describes heavy sweating from underlying medical conditions (diabetes, thyroid disease, infections), certain medications or menopause.
Neuromodulator injections to the problematic area offers a safe, inexpensive and long-term solution to hyperhidrosis. It is considered one of the most effective treatments for heavy sweating when administered by an experienced and licensed professional. Dr. Djan’s method of neuromodulator injections to treat hyperhidrosis is relatively painless and lasts approximately 20 minutes. There is no downtime involved and one is able to return to normal daily activities immediately.
The reduction in sweating is noticeable after 2 weeks and this effect lasts up to 8 months before the injections need to be repeated. This is an excellent regimen compared to other less effective and labour-intensive methods described for heavy sweating such as prescription anti-perspirants (aluminium chloride), prescription face wipes (glycopyrronium tosylate), iontophoresis, microwave therapy & surgical removal of sweat glands (sympathectomy).
