A blepharoplasty refers to eyelid surgery that aims to address a condition called dermatochalasis. Dermatochalasis refers to the loose/excess eyelid skin that hangs over the eyes. It is a common sign of eyelid aging and is often seen in people above the age of 35 years.
Often, this excess eyelid skin hangs over the eyelashes and obscures vision. People notice improved vision when they elevate the flaps of skin with their fingertips. These are suitable candidates for functional blepharoplasty.
A blepharoplasty is painless 30 – 45 minute procedure performed under local anaesthesia with mild sedation in a dedicated surgical theatre. It is a day surgical procedure and will not require an overnight stay at the hospital. The sutures placed are removed 5 days after the procedure.
